About The Hare’s Corner
Hello, and welcome to The Hare’s Corner, bringing you a little sunshine (and wind and rain) from the stunning Dingle Peninsula, southwest Ireland.
The Hare’s Corner is the little bit of field left unmown in which the Irish Hare can hide, snuggled down in his “form”, the grassy nest where he spends his days, ready for adventures at night. Thus, this newsletter will hopefully be a little bit of scraggly meadow between the bohereens (lanes) of modern life where you might find wild flowers and all manner of interesting things.
Here in West Kerry, life goes on much as it did thousands of years ago. Farmers still raise lambs and calves in the meadows, turn sheep onto the high hills, walk the dairy cattle up and down the lanes to and from the milking parlour each day. The Curlew still call from the bogs; the Hooded Crow sits on the ancient standing stones, looking out across the centuries – and down in Dingle Bay, the wild Atlantic crashes onto craggy rocks and across wide sandy beaches like it did when Bronze Age people built their stone hut circles; Vikings sailed up the coasts terrifying the monks on Skellig Michael; and even further back, when Neolithic people buried their dead in spectacular wedge tombs that still awe us today.
And through all the long years and across the rugged mountains, wild bogs and peaceful meadows, the music rings out. The melodies may have changed, the instruments altered – but the sentiments remain the same as when Eire was first settled: singing of tragedy and triumph, love and dreams all across this beautiful green land.
The Hare’s Corner is designed to inspire you to dream about Ireland. And it may even tempt you to come and visit. You will be most welcome!
